At the age of 14 traveled to Guyman, Oklahoma where the family joined Julia. In Hobart, Oklahoma, Lorenz picked cotton for about 6 months. After the family had lived there about 4 years they decided to return to Michigan. Lorenz met and married Carrie Maud Bennett and they settled in Lansing, where he worked for Paragon Oil Company delivering kerosene to grocery stores. The company sent him to Elkton, Michigan for a time. Later he came back to Lansing and went to work for Atlas Drop Forge. He was employed as a "heater." The Atlas Company made the crankshaft for the "Reo" car which involved a hand twisting operation. Lorenz at times got heat cramps from it and soon decided to go back to farming. He bought or developed a milk hauling unit for the purpose of getting the milk to nearby Mason. One night as the truck was being filled with gas by the light of a kerosene lamp, the barn caught fire. Lorenz drove the burning truck out of the barn. A second barn fire occurred on Thanksgiving Day in 1926. Wanda was born on the following day. Died January 1975 in Holt, Michigan and buried at Dimondale, Michigan. |
