400+ Media Items, Here to Stay

I have finally come up with a good process for synchronizing my offline media with the website, and have uploaded 400+ media items. There are about two hundred that include living people, so only family members can register for an account and see those photos. I have also merged my mother's (Finison) and father's (White) trees because they had several common ancestors and I was tiring of maintaining their ancestors in both trees. There are a few duplicate people as a result of this who I have yet to merge.

More Schlehs Added

My great-great-great-grandfather Johann Georg Schleh (aka John George Schlee) (1836-1861) immigrated to America from Durrweiler in 1852. I have been corresponding with Amy Jo Schleh Dayton, a cousin who has more information on descendants of the ancestral patriarch, Hanss Schleh (c.1615 - 1676), and who has provided me with two reports on Schleh descendants. Using these and other sources (mainly the FamilySearch International Genealogical Index), I have populated the database with many Schleh cousins. There are now 52 Schlee, 87 Schleeh, and 669 Schleh, plus some more descendants of other surnames.

Amy's immigrant ancestor was also a Johann Georg Schleh (1824-1904); he settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Another Johann Georg Schleh, born 12 years later, also lived in Ann Arbor, believe it or not. (There were a whopping 44 Johann Georg Schlehs in total.)

I have also added many more descendants of Johannes Berner and Johann Michael Rauleder in the past few months.

Google Charts API

I am going to start using this news function more often to announce site changes and major genealogy additions, if only as a record for myself. Today, I would like to announce that I am working on modifying the statistics chart page (accessible from the Charts menu) to use the Google Chart API, which will look much nicer.

More German Fineisens Added

I have added more descendants of Johann Fineisen and Franziska Spitnagel from Benten-family.de. They descend from another son, Nikolaus, who was born in Liptingen in 1724. Click here to see a full descendant chart of Nikolaus Fineisen.

On another note, you may have noticed the map tab on individual pages. So far it will show the most places on the map for people in England. I am working on getting it to work for the United States.

Site Upgrade - Photos are Here to Stay, Finally!

I upgraded the software that runs Finison.com, PhpGedView, to version 4.1 beta. It has many improvements, including added reports and charts, a link to the message board on top, sortable tables, improved search, and more. Most importantly, it adds the option to keep media links when a new GEDCOM is uploaded, so the photos I added are finally here to stay, and I will continue to add more.

I have been doing some Internet research on the German side of the family and found a lot of information about the ancestry of Anna Maria Bohnet. I also found a link to some other Fineisens in Liptingen, who I will add to the tree soon.

Finison.com Mentioned in Van Aken Newsletter

Thanks to Aunt Ann for mentioning the website in the January 2006 Van Aken/Van Auken Newsletter. She mentioned that Finison.com has information on the Van Aken family as well as the Finison family. It certainly does! In fact, there are 1334 individuals with VA surnames in the individual list. There are also about 2000 descendants of Marinus Van Aken (including spouses). The family tree at Finison.com contains most, but not all, of the descendants found in the family trees at VanAken.org, but I also have some descendants not found there.

Website Upgrade

I have just completed an upgrade of the software that runs this site, PhpGedView, to version 4.0. This should add a lot of functionality. Unfortunately, I was not able to retain the existing users. I will recreate them and give people instructions on how to change their password soon. I will also be adding media to the site in the near future.
